WildTangent Removal

Overview: WildTangent was founded in 1998 by Alex St. John, the principal creator of Microsoft's DirectX multimedia platform. From the beginning, the company's mission has been to enable the delivery of the richest interactive content experiences online using the least amount of bandwidth. To that end, the first version of WildTangent's technology platform, Web Driver 1.0, was released in September 1999. Since then over 50 million people have adopted the WildTangent Web Driver? to enrich their online experience.

This is an online gaming package that is installed by a number of third party applications and even OEMs, ISPs and AIM. The games aspect of this is really rather cool. The being installed without you asking for it isn't cool at all.

Removal Instructions:
The packaged uninstaller actually works good enough for most of us: If not, they supplied some good instructions here. Here's what they say:

To remove the Web Driver, and associated software, please do the following:

  1. Open Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs
  2. Select the WildTangent Web Driver
  3. Click Remove
  4. Select the WildTangent Updater
  5. Click Remove
  6. Select the WildTangent GameChannel
  7. Click Remove
  8. Reboot
  9. After uninstallation, open your Windows directory, and delete the wt folder
  10. Delete the c:\program Files\WildTangent directory

Please Note: If the Wildtangent Control Panel icon still appears in the Windows Control Panel, you may need to search your computer's hard drive for any occurance of the files "wtcpl.dll" and "wtcpl.cpl" and remove it. This occassionally occurs when an older version of the Web driver was partially removed.

Destroy Autorun:
Delete the following keys
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\WildTangent CDA

Reboot your system then:

Make sure you click start --> Run and type in msconfig. Then select the startup tab. Any references to the processes below.

End Processes (may or may not exist):
aimwdi~1.exe
ddcactivemenu.exe
ddcman.exe
ddcmigrate.exe
gamechannel.exe

wcmdmgr.exe
wcmdmgrl.exe
ref=ref="http://forum.iamnotageek.com/t-78659.html">wtbgmtt.exe
wthost.exe
wtinstaller.exe

Unregister DLLs:
Each file is in several locations so you'll need to search for them and unregister + delete them in every location you find. These are found in quite a few locations so you'll have to search for them, unregister them and then delete them everywhere you find it running.

cdaengine0400.dll
dx5drv.dll
dx7drv.dll
sound.dll
webdriver.dll
wdengine.dll
wdinuseplugin.dll
wt3d.dll
wtdmmp.dll
wtdmmpv.dll
wthostctl.dll
wtisa.dll
wtvh.dll

Remove Directories:
%program_files%\wildtangent
%windows%\wt
%profile%\local settings\application data\wildtangent

Clean your Registry:

You should be back to normal IF this was your only problem. I suggest you post in our HJT forum since its not likely that this is your only bug. Read this first.
